Laoag City Department of Education (DepEd) representatives once again showcased their talents by topping the recently concluded 3rd National Science Fair and Science Dama held at the Bacarra National Comprehensive High School from February 7-9, 2006. The winning students—Ralph Emerson Agonoy, Jesy Gem Agnir and Ralph Patrick Erice—from the Ilocos Norte National High School (INNHS) took first place in the Cluster 2 Life Science Team Category on Investigatory Project. Their entry was titled “Pithecellubium Dulce (camachile) Bark Decaction as Cowhide Tannin.” Janna Nolasco, Glenna Tapia and Rowena Chiguel, also from INNHS, won third place in the Cluster 1 Physical Sciences Team Category with their entry “A Study on the Effectiveness of Kamias Extract as an Active Ingredient for an Anti-Stain Laundry Soap.” Johnel Cabacungan, on the other hand, a pupil from E.F. Siazon Elementary School, took the top honors in the Science Dama competition. Laoag City Schools Division Superintendent Cecilia P. Aribuabo congratulated all the winners saying their win was an honor for the city since it was a national competition and that these winners would represent the country if there would be international science fairs. In a related development, Aribuabo reported that her office has not received any complaints regarding this year’s conduct of Juniors-Seniors Promenade as she said she has instructed all schools in the city to hold their proms in their respective schools instead of renting function halls. The renting of function halls, she added, jacks up the students’ contributions for the event. She clarified though that there would still be contributions for the proms but this should only be minimal and would depend on what the students would want to do with their respective proms. She further added that all contributions for the event would have to be approved by the students. Dominic B. dela Cruz
