In line with the observance of National Disaster Consciousness Month, the Department of Education (DepEd) will be spearheading various activities to promote a culture of disaster consciousness and preparedness among public school students and personnel. With the theme “Safe Ka Ba? Programa Laban Sa Kalamidad Tungo Sa Pagunlad,” this year’s activities aim to teach students and personnel on what to do before, during and after the occurrence of manmade or natural hazards. “The safety of our students and school personnel is of utmost importance to the department”, Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said. “We will ensure that teachers and students are empowered to face any eventuality.” The DepEd Central Office, in cooperation with members of the National Disaster Coordinating Council and the private sector, will undertake a number of activities to highlight the month-long celebration, including the launching of the Build Better, Be Better Project and the conduct of the 2nd Quarter Nationwide Earthquake Drill. The department shall also assist in the conduct of a three-day Youth Forum to disseminate the Wakayama Youth Declaration on Disaster Risk Reduction Education, and the implementation of the UNICEF-assisted Safe Schools Project. Presidential Executive Order 137 dated August 10, 1999 declares the month of July of every year as National Disaster Consciousness Month. (DepEd)
