THE Laoag City Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) was awarded the cleanest and greenest jail in the entire Region I during the 16th BJMP anniversary celebration held at the Regional Educational Learning Center in San Vicente, San Fernando City, La Union on July 20. With award Laoag jail warden Severino G. Khita expressed his gratitude in behalf of all Laoag BJMP personnel as they bested 21 other jails in the region to garner the said award. Khita also cited the city government, through Laoag Mayor Michael V. Fariñas for the continued support extended to the city jail. Apart from having clean surroundings, the city jail also has a vegetable garden inside and outside its compound. Khita added that evaluators also tasted the food being served to detainees. The Ilocos Times also learned that the regional evaluators have conducted four inspections at the Laoag City jail starting in January this year. Aside from the clean-and-green award, all city jail personnel were also given certificates of commendation for a job well done. Khita was also given an individual award as the provincial administrator of the year. The jail warden said the award was based on the strict implementation of contraband entry at the city jail. Three other jail officers were also given medals by the BJMP national office for maintaining good records. They were SJO2 Gabur, SJO3 Castro and SJO2 Pante. Meanwhile, Laoag Councilor Sonia B. Siazon was also given a special award during the anniversary celebration for her unending support to the BJMP. With this assistance, the regional BJMP acknowledged Siazon with a special award. Fariñas was also given a special award for his continuing support to the city jail, especially in the construction of additional jail cells.
