PGMA sends flowers to FM crypt on All-Saints’ Day
THE Marcos family expressed elation to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, following the chief executive’s gesture of sending flowers, for the first time, to the former president’s refrigerated crypt in Batac, Ilocos Norte on All-Saints’ Day. “That was a very nice gesture and we appreciated it very much,” said the former president’s only son and namesake, Ilocos Norte Governor Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. as he responded to reporters asking his reaction to the surprise move of Pres. Arroyo. Through the years, the governor said this was the first time Mrs. Arroyo has sent flowers to his father, even attaching the seal of Malacañang Palace in the flowers. “It was a kind thing for her to do because she did not have to,” Marcos noted, adding that the flower offering may have been suggested by her advisers. When asked if the gesture would pave the way for possible reconciliation between the Marcoses, who are mainly in the opposition, and the Arroyo administration, the governor stressed that Mrs. Arroyo’s gesture is just an expression of sympathy and kindness and has no other meaning for them. The late Marcos defeated the then-re-electionist Pres. Diosdado Macapagal, father of Mrs. Arroyo, in 1965. In 2004, Mrs. Arroyo became the only president—next to Marcos—to win re-election.
