1st Peace Pole in North installed in LC

The first “Peace Pole” in Northern Luzon has been installed in Laoag City after its formal launch by the city government on October 22 at the Fonacier Park, where the said pole was erected.

According to Laoag Mayor Michael V. Fariñas, who was on hand during the launching, the Peace Pole is a project of the Japanese government through the Department of Public Information of the United Nations.

The Peace Pole serves as a reminder of peace for everyone who sees the edifice where a message of peace in various languages had been inscribed into every side of the pole.

Fariñas said he is also planning to put up other Peace Poles in the city, reasoning that the pole reminds everyone of the peace in their hearts.

The said project was also coordinated by the Pascual Ladies’ Dormitory Council in Barangay 5 and the Laoag City Tourism and Social Concerns Council.

According to Ms Minifred Gavino, the council project officer, the Peace Pole dedication is a worldwide activity undertaken in every region of every country.
