Ilocos Times columnist tops career service exam
1st in Ilocos Norte, 2nd overall in Region 1

Ilocos Times (IT) columnist and editorial consultant Stephen T. Barreiro, successfully passed the July 30, 2006 Career Service Exam PPT (Professional level) ranking first among 701 examinees in Ilocos Norte with a rating of 88.38.

Only 31 of the 701 examinees from Laoag City successfully passed the exam with a rating of 80 or more. The percentage of successful examinees for Laoag City and Ilocos Norte was at 4.42%, considered one of the lowest ever.

The two previous exams given on April 2, 2006 and October 16, 2005 had passing rates of 7.38% and 4.79% respectively.

The 31 successful examinees are scheduled to receive their Certificates of Eligibility on Monday, November 6, 2006, in a simple ceremony at the DepEd Conference hall in Laoag City.

As per records released by the CSC, Mr. Barreiro ranked 2nd overall among 2,354 examinees for the entire Region 1, behind Maureen Dinna D. Giron of Baguio City who garnered a rating of 91.

In an interview with ABS-CBN anchorman Victor Andal, Mr. Barreiro said that if ever he would be called to enter government service, he would bring the same level of commitment and idealism that has marked his tenure in the print media.

“The management and staff of Ilocos Times are proud of Mr. Barreiro’s success and I know he will be a great asset to any government agency he may wish to contribute his talents to, and that he would continue his quest for excellence which has characterized his work in the Ilocos Times,” said IT publisher Efren Ramos, Jr.

Mr. (Steve) Barreiro, who entered U.P. Dilaman (with a degree in A.B. Economics) in 1982 after graduating from Philippine Science High School on the same year, is the son of the late Jesus C. Barreiro, former manager of then ABS-CBN DZYY Laoag, and Laoag’s very own Gloria Tumanneg-Barreiro. His younger sister, Tricia, won a $24,000.00 prize money in Jeopardy, one of the most popular general knowledge game shows in the U.S., last May of this year.
